Penn State RB Brown could miss season with medical issue

Penn State standout running back Journey Brown could be forced to sit out the 2020 season with what the school described only as a "medical condition."

In a statement issued to Lions 247, Penn State confirmed Brown's situation.

"Journey Brown is being treated for a medical condition discovered during the off-season and will potentially miss the 2020 football season," the statement said.

A redshirt junior, the 5-foot-11 Brown was behind Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders on the depth chart before getting his chance to star in 2019. He averaged 6.9 yards per carry -- fifth all-time at Penn State -- and ran for 890 yards on 129 carries with 12 touchdowns.

He scored at least one touchdown in five straight games to end the season and rushed for 202 yards against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, which set a bowl record for the Nittany Lions.

From Meadville, Pa., Brown was a three-star running back in the Class of 2017. The Nittany Lions are expected to turn to Noah Cain and Devyn Ford to carry the load at running back.

Penn State opens the season on Saturday at Indiana.
